Can you recommend a good small or portable generator?

What we want is for all of our customers to buy the correct generator for their needs, and there are some fairly simple rules to follow.

Most (if not all) smaller generators - say under 5kVA - are petrol engine machines. We sell dozens of makes and models, but they call be split into two camps - they either come with a Chinese engine or they don't. This has a huge impact on your decision and should make your choice a lot simpler....let's take a closer look.

As a rule of thumb, if you're looking for a small/portable generator to run for regular periods of 2-3 hours or more, look for a non-Chinese engine such as Honda or Kohler engine - they will last you well and they're also very reliable. If you only need a generator to run for 30 minutes here and there, one of the cheaper generators with a Chinese engine should be fine, such as a Champion, Hyundai, Warrior or Loncin. There is one other engine that we sell and that is a Ford engine in all Ford generators - this has a growing reputation as being very strong and reliable also.

When choosing a small generator, just remember that the cheaper Chinese engined generators are not designed to run for long periods - this is reflected in their non-commercial warranty. If you used one for 3-4 hours every day you could expect it to last no more than a few months. The same Honda or Kohler engined generator would comfortably last for 2-3 years - so if you spend a little bit more now, you get much better value for money in the long run.
