What does an Automatic Transfer Switch do?

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) transfers power from a standard source, like utility or grid power, to an emergency source such as a generator, when the standard source fails.

An ATS is usually a panel that fixes to a wall on the inside of your building. It senses a power interruption and sends a signal to start the generator.  When the standard source is restored to normal power the ATS transfers power back to the standard source and shuts the generator down.  Automatic Transfer Switches are often used in high availability environments such as data centers, manufacturing plans, telecommunication networks and so forth, but increasinly in homes as they become more affordable.

Your generator will need to be ATS ready to take advantage of a switch panel - not many of the smaller diesel generators are so make sure you buy the right one!

Energy Generator  Sales can sell you "off the shelf" ATS panels, or we also build bespoke panels ourselves. The vast majority of ATS panels are made in China, but ours are built in the UK and are of a significantly higher quality. We also install complete home and business backup packages, including installation and servicing. Call us to find out more.
